New York baseball great Gil Hodges appears in Manhattan as mystery guest on the May 26, 1963, episode of the television game show What’s My Line?
Earlier the same month, Hodges left his spot as first baseman for the New York Mets, and retired from his Major League Baseball (MLB) playing career to serve as manager of MLB’s Washington Senators.
Hodges had been selected by the National League’s New York Mets in the MLB expansion draft in October 1961. Previously a fan favorite as a National League first baseman for the World Series champion Brooklyn (and Los Angeles) Dodgers, Hodges became manager of the Mets in 1968. In 1969, he managed the Mets to their first World Series championship.
Hodges was voted into the New York Sports Hall of Fame in 1990.
